Weekly Fishing Report 03.18.10

Vexilar, jigging machine and almost a limit

CONDITIONS: The lake is locked tight with 36 inches of ice and a six inch snow pack reflecting the sun and insulating the ice. No softness appearing yet in any shore line areas. Warmer days have not outweighed the continued cold nights with AM temperatures at zero or below. All fishing access areas are open. Roads are clear with a few icy spots. The sounds of Geese and Gulls are starting to fill the air with the hope of Spring.

TROUT:FAIR TO GOOD:  As it has all season the west end of the lake continues to out perform the east. From Rocking Chair to Cross Creek and Stoll Mountain to points west action has been consistent. Bite is good early through mid morning with action slowing considerably at Noon. DOW has stocked Cutthroats and Cuttbows at North Shore of the catchable variety. A good place to take the kids this weekend as they normally will hang out for a week or so before dispersing.

KOKANEE SALMON:FAIR TO GOOD: It is all about the spot. As much as you do not want to move because the ice is so thick move you must if you have no fish beneath you. Just 20 feet can make a huge difference. Sometimes one side of the jigging machine is better than the other. Action is good from early AM through late morning and sometimes early afternoon. Swedish Pimple PFO #4 is the most productive with other spoons also doing the trick. Paddle Bugs, small crappie jigs and sparkle tubes in pink will also work. Try a Luminious pink Tas Devil 7 gram set in reverse position. Areas in the channel (60 feet) out from North Shore continue to be the most consistent. Fish running 12 to 18 inches.

NORTHERN PIKE: FAIR: Large fish still being landed. Patience is the key. Corral Cove, North Shore, Rocky Flats to Stoll are good bets. Mid morning to mid afternoon are times worth trying. Sucker on tip up or water dog if you are lucky enough to have one. Tubes and spoons tipped also can get lucky.
