We want to thank the 115 teams participating in this years Grand Slam. We also want to apologize to the many teams that were lined up ready to to check in at 4:30AM and we were not ready. Who set that alarm clock anyway?

The weather was great for a great day on the ice. Forty Teams weighed in fish made up of 293.855 pounds of Trout, 49.525 pounds of Northern Pike and 44.945 pounds of Kokanee Salmon. You do not always win BFP and First Place  but that certainly is the goal and in the case of Trout and Salmon the competition was tight with only .165 ounces separating first and second in the Salmon category and only .29 ounces in the Trout category. Not listed above was the money won for 4th and 5th places in all categories which was $226.00 and $156.00. Our advertised BFP is $500.00 per category which is based on a sold out event of 150 teams with half buying in. There were 90 teams that bought in the BFP making the payout $600.00 per category. We gave away over $7,100.00 in cash prizes, by far the most of any ice fishing tournament in Colorado. In case you were wondering the smallest Pike was .32 ounce. Lots of great door prizes were given away including two pairs of Avalanche tickets. One pair were great seats including a $50.00 gift card to the Sports Column for a total value prize of $220.00

EAGLE CLAW BONUS: If you purchased $5.00 or more of any Eagle Claw products within one week of the contest your team was eligible for a $300.00 shopping spree at the Wright/McGill facility in Denver. The prize includes a tour of the factory where they actually still make hooks here in the USA. For that alone we should all support Eagle Claw. Out of the three First Place teams, Team #3 White/Johnson and Team #56 Elwell/Elwell were eligible and will split the prize for $150.00 each. Congratulations again!

NEW BOAT GIVEAWAY $1,200.00 insurance policy Sponsored by Great Lakes Marine and Aurora Marine.

In order to qualify to win the boat a team must weigh in at least one fish any size. The two digit number to the right of the decimal point becomes the teams possible lucky number. One team is randomly chosen to get to match the preselected winning number.

Team 22 Seth Richardson/Rob Richardson won the chance. Their number 94 was not the lucky number.

The winning number was 37 and that was actually held by Team 1  weighing in the third smallest total weight at 1.37 lbs There were 19 teams qualified to be drawn. At that point in time having already beaten the huge odds of matching the number Team 1  had a 1 in 19 chance to win the boat.

Although this was one of the lowest turnouts for this event it was one of the best. All the participating teams had a great time. Since the pay out formula is to pay 20% of the field the money remains big even if the team count is low. The crowd that comes to watch the weigh in, eat at the fish fry, hear some live music and generally enjoy a special day at the Park continues to grow. The crawfish boil was monumental and historic. Last year we couldn’t get any. This year we had over 15o pounds. Cajun Chuck did a memorable boil.

COLORADO CLASSIC ICE FISHING TOURNAMENT 2011

MARINA MARCH MADNESS MARCH 5

ELEVEN MILE STATE PARK

We always seem to get lucky on the weather for March Madness. Except for a little wind toward the end temperatures were mild and the ice was solid. This may be the only contest where practically every contestant caught fish. If some one didn’t they might want to consider another sport. However the catching in general frustrated many with the recent stockers being the main bill of fare. We told everyone that the small ones could be used for “first fish” but not for general weigh in. We anticipated that there would be other bigger fish weighed in and in fact there were. But not one Pike nor any Trout over 3 1/2 pounds. The teams that worked deeper water near the pressure ridge did well with numerous nice Trout and plenty of big Kokanee. The chick team of Warner/Koverman actually caught a 2 plus pound Salmon just feet from the weigh station.

Team participation was down from last year by 12. Team 58 Perry Aphelbeck and Ford Williams from Silverthorne demonstrated their skills by out fishing everyone by a long shot. In first place with 90 points going into March Madness they ended the day with 220 points scoring 2 first places, 2 second places, 1 third place and drew the BFP for a payout of $1,531.00 and dominating the Colorado Classic in historic fashion. The Classic win gave them another $513.00. Their total contest winnings was a whopping $4,201.00 for all three events. Father/Son Team 19 Bob and Nic Thompson of Colorado Springs started the day tied for sixth place overall with 25 points scored a first place, second place and third place to win second in the Classic with 85 points and posting total contest winnings of $1,386.00.

Team 14 Robby Richardson and Seth Firestone of Gunnison went into the day with 68 points and had a bad day without placing but held onto third place in the Classic with 68 points. Although Team 2 Brandon White and Bryan Johnson of Pueblo made a charge it wasn’t good enough to overtake Team 14 ending with 65 points. We originally announced the winners erroneously having Team 19 tied with Team 2 for third place in the Classic. But a challenge by Team 19 that we neglected to add their previous points was correct and adjustment needed to be made. We apologize for the error but we are tabulating points on the ice without benefit of a spreadsheet and made a mistake. Team 41 John and Tyler Elwell from Woodland Park another Father/Son effort had a good day with a first, second and third place. They were not qualified for the Classic but won $373.00 for the day.

GRAND SLAM RESULTS 2011 - posted January 10, 2011

DENVER SPORTS COLUMN COLORADO CLASSIC ICE FISHING TOURNAMENT 2011

JANUARY 8, 2011

THE GRAND SLAM: With a very concerned Park Manager, Kevin Tobey considered canceling the tournament because of ice conditions. After consulting us we agreed to an information presentation that included a set of specific instructions, distributing a flier “Ice Danger & Safety” provided by the Park and an offer to refund entry fees if anyone wanted out due to ice conditions. No one requested a refund and there were no incidents of contestants falling through the ice.  We understand the Parks concern for safety first and foremost  but we question how our contest could be canceled yet the Park  remain open to ice fishing?  Winter activities in the Colorado high country including ice fishing, downhill and back country skiing, snowmobiling, winter camping, ice skating, ice climbing, ice sailing and more come with inherent risks. We certainly acknowledge the extreme variations in current ice conditions and there could be situations in the future that would require a cancellation but luckily this was not one of them. We want to thank all the contestants for fishing in a safe manner.

Start time temperature was 6 degrees. The day was perfect with highs in the low 40′s and no wind. The atmosphere was competitive but extremely friendly as ice anglers from across Colorado vied for cash and bragging rights. Teams that have seen victory in years past showed off their skills and luck again. Williams/Aphelback from Silverthorne placed 2nd in Pike and 3rd in Salmon. The one Kokanee they weighed in was 1.835 lbs and garnered them 3rd place and BFP for a total of $770.00. Shuey/Vosberg from Buena Vista who are known for their Pike skills took 1st place Trout with an impressive total of 15.185 lbs and a 4.845 lb Rainbow which took BFP honors. Their Eagle Claw purchase qualified them for the Eagle Claw bonus package worth $500.00 and they won the draw against Team 58. In the Pike category Richardson/Firestone from Gunnison landed a great 17.385 lb monster for the BFP and a total of 18.635 lbs for 1st place. Lots of smiles from those who won door prizes including Avalanche vs Bruins tickets and Nuggets vs Thunder tickets courtesy the Denver Sports Column.
