DENVER SPORTS COLUMN COLORADO CLASSIC ICE FISHING TOURNAMENT 2011

JANUARY 8, 2011

THE GRAND SLAM: With a very concerned Park Manager, Kevin Tobey considered canceling the tournament because of ice conditions. After consulting us we agreed to an information presentation that included a set of specific instructions, distributing a flier “Ice Danger & Safety” provided by the Park and an offer to refund entry fees if anyone wanted out due to ice conditions. No one requested a refund and there were no incidents of contestants falling through the ice.  We understand the Parks concern for safety first and foremost  but we question how our contest could be canceled yet the Park  remain open to ice fishing?  Winter activities in the Colorado high country including ice fishing, downhill and back country skiing, snowmobiling, winter camping, ice skating, ice climbing, ice sailing and more come with inherent risks. We certainly acknowledge the extreme variations in current ice conditions and there could be situations in the future that would require a cancellation but luckily this was not one of them. We want to thank all the contestants for fishing in a safe manner.

Start time temperature was 6 degrees. The day was perfect with highs in the low 40′s and no wind.The atmosphere was competitive but extremely friendly as ice anglers from across Colorado vied for cash and bragging rights. Teams that have seen victory in years past showed off their skills and luck again. Williams/Aphelback from Silverthorne placed 2^nd in Pike and 3^rd in Salmon. The one Kokanee they weighed in was 1.835 lbs and garnered them 3^rd place and BFP for a total of $770.00. Shuey/Vosberg from Buena Vista who are known for their Pike skills took 1^st place Trout with an impressive total of 15.185 lbs and a 4.845 lb Rainbow which took BFP honors. Their Eagle Claw purchase qualified them for the Eagle Claw bonus package worth $500.00 and they won the draw against Team 58. In the Pike category Richardson/Firestone from Gunnison landed a great 17.385 lb monster for the BFP and a total of 18.635 lbs for 1^st place. Lots of smiles from those who won door prizes including Avalanche vs Bruins tickets and Nuggets vs Thunder tickets courtesy the Denver Sports Column.

The Colorado Classic came down to the final luck of the draw. With six teams all in play the final 25 points for the Big Fish Pot’s random draw would determine this seasons overall points winners. The luck went to Team 23 Shawn Shuey and Don Vosberg of Buena Vista who had 85 points after their fifth hour 1^st Place for a final total of 110 points. In 2004 Shawn and his father Bill(deceased) won the Classic in a similar fashion catching a large Northern to win the 5^th hour. Team 53 Shawn Shake and Ron Tomlinson of Buena Vista started the day with only 18 points but were sitting at 68 points after scoring 1^st Place in hour one and two. With two chips in the bucket they had 40% odds to win the BFP and the Classic with 93 points. Meanwhile Team 17 Matt Vertovec and Jason Quintana of Pueblo crossed their fingers scoring the third hours 1^st Place position putting them at 63 points hoping for a BFP draw raising them to 88 and first place. Lets not forget Team 45 Peter Decker and Trevor Carpenter the two youngsters from Colorado Springs with an age waiver. They caught the biggest fish of the day, a 6.610 lb Northern Pike and 1st Place points in hour four moving them up to 60 points. Had their chip been drawn they would have tied Shuey/Vosberg for first place with 85 points.

This year’s Classic had 296 participating teams as compared to 309 in 2009. However there were 58 teams registered for all three events as compared to 42 the previous year. We want to thank all of our sponsors and contestants for making this seasons tournament a huge success.

The tournament’s first leg is the Grand Slam where anglers can fish for the three main specie at Eleven Mile Reservoir, Northern Pike, Trout (Rainbow, Brown, Cutthroat, Cuttbow), Kokanee Salmon. Tournament specifics can be viewed on the 2010 Contest link at 11milesports.com. January 9 saw the mild side of winter with no wind and day time highs in the upper 40′s. The fish also cooperated. The competition was friendly with many anglers going home with cash.
