Fishing Report

Weekly Fishing Report 10.20.11 - posted October 20, 2011

Not a fair weather fish nor fisherman. Caught on fly rod with black woolly. Released.

But here is a fair weather fish!

CONDITIONS: Lake closes to boating October 31 but is open on shore 24/7  365. It has been dry of late with great Fall weather. Crisp mornings mild days. Witchers Cove boat ramp is closed. Park showers and laundry are closed for the season.

WATER FLOW: 67.6  CFS   IN   99  CFS OUT.

WATER TEMP: 49

TROUT: VERY GOOD TO EXCELLENT: Lots of fish being caught. Cuttbows are the biggest ranging to 8 pounds with lots of beautiful Cutthroats in the 2 to 3 pound range being landed. It is football season in more ways than one. People continue to be impressed by the sheer girth of  fish being caught this Fall. Many methods are having success and the numbers of large fish being caught is just amazing. It is sad about the state of Salmon fishing here but the Trout action has rarely been better.

SALMON:  POOR:  There are some moving up river. Try Sucker Cove to Cross Creek. Snagging Season opened October 1.  DOW will be reducing the stocking numbers this year from 900,000 to 500,000. If the Gill Lice persists things will remain the same.
NORTHERN PIKE: GOOD:  Cooler water temperatures tell them its time to eat just a bit more. Trolling or pitching. Work Cross Creek to Rocky Flats. Spoons and sticks do the trick. Not lots of monsters but decent fish being caught.

OFF SEASON HOURS: SEPTEMBER 12 – October 30. 8:00AM – 4:00PM SATURDAY AND SUNDAY    M-F BY RESERVATION

HALF PRICE WATERCRAFT BEGINS SEPTEMBER 11. RESERVATIONS NOW BEING TAKEN. With those rates and great Colorado Fall weather weekends sell out quickly.

We shrink wrap boats for winter storage. Call for pricing.

ICE FISHING IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER.

They just keep getting bigger

CONDITIONS: We saw about 6 inches of snow last Saturday. That’s all gone and things are back to dry. Fall colors still around in spite of all the wind we had the last few days. Lake closes to boating October 31.

WATER FLOW: 247 CFS   IN   197  CFS OUT.

WATER TEMP: 55

TROUT: GOOD TO VERY GOOD: Lots of big fish being caught. Cuttbows are the biggest with lots of beautiful Cutthroats in the 2 to 3 pound range being landed. A recent stocking of catchable cuttbows have quickly spread through out the lake. Shore or boat this is the time you want to be fishing if a trophy is your desire or a fresh fish dinner for the family is on the menu. Most successful bait from shore has been night crawlers or Power Bait. Lots of action on jigs and flies as well as Tasmanian Devils, Rapala, Kastmaster and Needlefish on the troll.

SALMON:  POOR:  You would think you would see some four year old’s schooling up. Sounds like bad news to us. Snagging Season opened October 1. We have heard of a few fish being snagged at the North Shore and around Sucker Cove. DOW will be reducing the stocking numbers this year from 900,000 to 500,000. If the Gill Lice persists things will remain the same.
NORTHERN PIKE: GOOD: Finally we are seeing decent action. Not lots of big fish but better numbers of moderate size ones. Enough action to keep you smiling. Things should improve through the month. Stoll Mtn to Rocky Flats and Howbert to Goose Island have been productive.

ICE FISHING IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER. We are working on our ice fishing equipment order. If there is a particular piece of equipment you are interested in give us a call for a special order price.

Sundown in Corral Cove

A fine Elevenmile stringer.

CONDITIONS: It has been about as beautiful as it can be up here this week. The colors and weather were peaking in perfect harmony. Then there is now. Batten down the hatches here comes the wind. Fall is in full swing with weather patterns moving in and out and great fishing like no other.

WATER FLOW: 251 CFS   IN   118  CFS OUT. They must be moving water from Spinney. The lake is rising fast.

WATER TEMP: 57.5

We have heard no reports of success. The situation is grim indeed. If Wildlife gets small numbers up the river the answer is clear. Gill Lice. Its time to set new policy but what to do? Perhaps let all remaining salmon stocks play out with no additional stocking. Then begin a new round. We are talking long term. In other words there would be no salmon fishing here for up to seven years. Bad news for all concerned. But if these fish keep reinfecting each other we are just throwing money away.

Eric and what Eleven Mile is all about. BIG FISH!

CONDITIONS: Looking like Fall with great aspen colors coming on. Still not at peak yet but getting close.
Weeds can still present some problems the further west you go on the lake. Water level still on a slow steady rise. With a great weekend weather report it might be a great time to visit the high country.

WATER FLOW: 98.3 CFS   IN   68.3  CFS OUT

WATER TEMP: 59

TROUT: GOOD TO VERY GOOD: Lots of big fish being caught. Cuttbows are the biggest with lots of beautiful Cutthroats in the 2 to 3 pound range being landed. A recent stocking of catchable cuttbows have quickly spread through out the lake and some times get in you way. Shore or boat this is the time you want to be fishing if a trophy is your desire or a fresh fish dinner for the family is on the menu. Most successful bait from shore has been night crawlers or Power Bait. Lots of action on jigs and flies as well as Tasmanian Devils on the troll.

SALMON:  POOR: Since its just about October you would think you would see some four year old’s schooling up. Sounds like bad news to us.
NORTHERN PIKE: FAIR: The season that never really kicked it  is still in the same mode. Fish are catchable but require effort. You hit a hot run for a short period of time. Try Spinner Baits worked super slow, Rapala’s and Daredevle’s. A few moderate size fish have been landed. Try Howbert to Goose Island or Rocky Flats to North Shore.

MARINA NEWS: Our original nine year contract to operate a marina concession with Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife and Denver Water expires in October. The concession was put out to public bid through the State RFP process in August. We are very pleased to announce that we have been awarded a new term that will be nine years with an option for a five year renewal. With this long term approach we hope to expand and improve services. Although not a done deal yet we hope to one day build cabins in the Park in addition to other services for Park visitors.

11 Mile Marina staff past and present on a fishing trip in the Flat Tops Primitive Wilderness

CONDITIONS: Fall is barely in the air. Lots of green still with aspens just starting their annual golden run. Lake cooling as nights start to dip below 30 although not by much. This is a great time of year to visit Eleven Mile State Park

WATER FLOW: 101 CFS   IN   62.5  CFS OUT

WATER TEMP: 61

TROUT: GOOD: As we slowly move into Fall the bigger fish will be moving in closer to shore. Trolling has been less productive than in weeks past but still producing some nice ones. You do have to work it. Changing up baits and working cove areas. Those drifting or anchoring and working various tubes and maribous or fly rod have been rewarded with nice Cuttbows over 20 inches ranging 4 to 6 pounds.
