Fishing Report

Weekly Fishing Report 12.29.11 - posted December 29, 2011

A holiday fish for Alex

CONDITIONS: Last weeks storm dumped a fair amount of snow. Trekking on the lake is a quite a bit slower. All fishing access areas are open. Ice thickness is hitting 18 inches and growing. Watch out for pressure ridges since the snow may hide some danger. Wind has not been a problem though it is blowing hard today.

WATER FLOW:       99.3   CFS   IN   105  CFS OUT

TROUT:  FAIR TO GOOD: Although fish can be caught all over the lake the West is the best. Not only that but extreme West. It looks like Cross Creek is the hot spot currently producing significantly more fish than any other spot. Spoons have been productive. Kastmaster, Swedish Pimple and Crododile’s tipped with meal or wax worm should be tried at least once. Other micro jigs like Rat Finke, Paddle Bugs, Sparkle Tubes or small Crappie jigs also are producing. Color de jour is just that, it can be different from day to day with Pink being the most consistent. Cutthroats, Cuttbows, stocker Rainbows and an occasional Brown can be had. Lots of big fish!

SALMON: POOR TO FAIR: Although some fish are being caught its is not easy and not always productive. Besides the long walk timing is everything. Even if you do get lucky to have a few come by they aren’t often interested. Early morning seems to be the best bite. Best chance are the big three. Deer Island, Duck Island out from Coyote and North Shore are all places to try.

NORTHERN PIKE: FAIR: A few fish here and there, mostly smaller. Five and six pound fish have been landed. Suckers are a good bet if there are no water dogs. Spoons and tube jigs also working.
WINTER HOURS: Weekends as soon as ice on 6:00AM – 4:00PM. December 26 – January 8 EVERYDAY 6:00AM – 4:00PM   We have fresh meal worms, frozen suckers and lots of ice fishing bait and stuff. Lots of stuff!  Krystal Lazers, Tiny Tots, Paddle Bugs, Sparkle Tubes and more.

Yes there is a Santa Claus and he brought two nice Kokanee. Photo courtesy James Lollis

CONDITIONS: The lake is 100% ice capped. Pressure ridges are forming and there is a good quality ice running 12 to 15 inches. We got about 10 inches of snow last night and expect a couple more today. We can only hope the wind blows the snow off the ice but to be sure a shovel will be needed gear. This is when a good sled is an ice fisherman’s best friend. The Park plows the access roads and lots but it will probably be Friday before that’s all done. Good weather on the horizon for the weekend.

WATER FLOW:       99.3   CFS   IN   105  CFS OUT

TROUT:  FAIR TO GOOD: The West side of the lake is definitely fishing better than the East. Area specific is the name of the game. Get in a good spot holding fish and look out! Be mobile if you see nothing because just a short adjustment in your location can be the world of difference. Look to Stoll Mountain, Cross Creek and Sucker Cove areas for best luck. Pink has been the hot color so far and don’t be afraid to bang a big spoon like a Kastmaster or Swedish Pimple tipped with a meal worm.

So why do they go to Antero Debi?   Debi no doubt asks this rhetorical question because she loves Eleven Mile and knows the incredible fish it holds.  Here’s what we think. Antero has historically produced lots of big fish and it is free to enter the impound versus $7.00/day for Eleven Mile. That’s just fine with us. In 2002 and 03 when Antero was closed Eleven Mile was pounded by the crowds on the ice and business was exceptional for the winter.  Because we also love Eleven Mile we would rather have a little less money in our cash register in the winter and less pressure on the fish which will benefit the quality of the catching for the long term. With Antero being lowered by two feet this year and the continued pressure the catching will more than likely grow more difficult. But we say let em go let go let em go and for those of us who know Eleven Mile the catching here will be better off for it.

SALMON: POOR TO FAIR: Well thanks to James we have a report. No doubt he worked hard to get those two nice fish above. He did comment that they had Gill Lice pretty bad. They were caught December 21.  There is hope for this season. We don’t suspect it will be great but some are better than none. Time will tell.

NORTHERN PIKE: FAIR: A few fish here and there, mostly smaller. Five and six pound fish have been landed. Suckers are a good bet if there are no water dogs. Spoons and tube jigs also working.

Nice Cutthroat

CONDITIONS: The lake is 100% ice capped. Pressure ridges are forming and there is a good quality ice running 6 to 10 inches in all areas checked. A minor snow covering of an inch or two. Roads are clear with some snow packed spots. All fishing access areas are open.

WATER FLOW:       63.6    CFS   IN   50.6   CFS OUT

TROUT:  FAIR:  Early reports have action slow with hit and miss opportunities. Fish being caught are mostly recent stocked Rainbows and some really nice Cutthroats. There have not been a lot of anglers out yet and we have only logged a few hours here and there. Early ice requires mobility in order to find the fish and where they are holding and what times of the day are best.

SALMON:  NO REPORT

Weekly Fishing Report 12.01.11 - posted December 1, 2011

November 30, 2011 3:00PM

CONDITIONS: It is snowing and blowing as of this report.  Lake is closed to boating. Park facilities like showers and laundry are closed. Some electric camp sites are open. Call Park Office at 719-748-3401 for questions and camping information.

WATER FLOW: 63.6    CFS   IN   50.6   CFS OUT

ICE UPDATE: 12.04.11  The lake was wide open Saturday and has capped again last night for at least the fifth time. There were no winds and if it can stay capped today the upcoming arctic temps should take care of business with ice fishing season beginning next weekend.

ICE REPORT: The lake has capped over and been broke up by wind no less than three times. After the current weather system blows through with resulting cold temperatures and the winds settle down the lake will freeze quickly. We will update this report on a daily basis as necessary.  Remember early ice can be extremely dangerous with large areas of inconsistent ice.  Of course that does not stop some anglers from heading out as soon as they can. We like a minimum of four inches before we venture out. It is best to go with two or more. Punch test holes and always have the following safety items: PFD, rope, ice picks hanging around your neck and a whistle. Stash an extra set of clothes in your vehicle. The most important thing right after taking an ice bath if you live to talk about it is to get the wet clothes off and get into dry ones.

TROUT:  NO REPORT    The Division dropped in a truck load of 12 “  Rainbows about three weeks ago. They have been hanging around the North Shore boat ramp where they were stocked.
