THE SOUTH PLATTE RIVER @ SPINNEY MOUNTAIN (aka "THE DREAM STREAM")
THE WATER: The stretch of river that connects Spinney and Eleven Mile Reservoirs offers some of the finest fishing opportunities in the South Park expanse of Colorado. Known locally as "The Dream Stream" big trout, lots of big trout, can be found in the nutrient rich waters that meander lazily through the three mile stretch of high altitude meadows where breathtaking mountain views surround you. Deep undercuts, long runs, large structure, dependable flows and like clockwork hatches provide plenty of chances to catch trophy trout.
THE SEASONS: Springtime in the Rockies means blue winged olive (BWO) mayfly hatches and this spot has a beauty of a hatch! Ranging in size from 16-20 these mayflies can be expected to put on a showing from March well into May. During the spring it is not unusual for flows to vary. When the flow exceeds 200cfs do not hesitate to begin nymph using either a SanJuan worm (size 12-14) or a South Platte olive & tan scud (size 16-20) as the attractor fly. For dropper flies, either a RS-2 (18-22), flashback pheasant tail (16-18), black beauty (18-22) or an occasional miracle nymph (18-22) will take their share of fish. Some of the smaller nymphs will also work well during those microscopic midge hatches that occur late in the day as will Griffith's Gnats (18-24) and Parachute Adams (16-18)
As things heat up in the high country and the calendar turns to June, July and the dog days of August bring on the terrestrials. The meadows surrounding the Dream Stream are loaded with hoppers and ants that are efffectively imitated by a Letort hopper (10-12) and the black & red flying ants ( 16-20)
