THE GRAND SLAM JANUARY 7, 2026

With calls to cancel the tournament because of ice conditions we went ahead. Signing up for any risky sport or Winter endeavor in Colorado is a personal choice of participation. We believe we could have a safe event. In fact we did with not a single incident or contestant falling through the ice. There was one incident of an ill prepared duck hunter who was way West where there was but one team from the contest near by that saved his life. CPW Rangers made contact with the hunter prior to his departure. He told them what he planned to do. They advised him strongly that he not do it. They would not prevent him from going out. Personal choice He was planning on dragging out his kayak to set decoys in a piece of open water. Bad choice. Once he fell in the person that was with him was unable to help and began screaming for assistance. The contestant called us. We called Park/Hartsel Fire & Rescue. David Jimenez PRO TEAM 16 Martinez/Jimenez was without his partner who was unable to make it. He was fishing with his young son and were the only ones nearby and heard the calls for help. He ran over. At first he tried to get some ice picks out to the hunter but the fresh snow complicated safety concerns. He ran back to his equipment and cut rope from his sleds and tied them together. He got on his stomach and made his way out. He got the rope to the hunter and was able to pull him out. David is a Colorado HERO!
