TROUT: GOOD: This is the time of the season to fish shallow for big fish. Electronics doesn’t do much good in 4 feet of water. Look for sandy bottom. North Shore in particular is good but this approach should work most anywhere on the lake. Bigger fish are set to spawn and are cruising under the ice to make spawn beds. Lots of stockers are cruising in and out which is a good thing as big Trout and Pike are also on the prowl trapping smaller fish in ice capped shallows. Pink jigs like the Eagle Claw Paddle Bug and 11 Mile Marina Krystal Lazer have been very effective. Bait is also very effective in the shallows. Nightcrawler, salmon eggs and spawn sack laying on the bottom. They will suck them in, better be quick on the hook set.

KOKANEE SALMON: FAIR: The fish are there but the biting is not. Many have caught some but no one is reporting anything more than a few here and there. They are finicky fish to be sure. Although its better to see fish than not it sure is frustrating when fish can be under you for significant time and chase your jigs up and down only to reject. Go through the box there seems to be no rime or reason for what they may hit. Timing is everything and no set pattern seems to be working.

NORTHERN PIKE: FAIR: There are big ones cruising the shallows in search of easy pickings. Some have shown interest but many are or so careful. Noise will scare them away. It’s better to leave your bait dead in the water rather than move or jig it once they come in on you. Scaring them away is way easier than you think. If they want it they will take it a some point. Leave it be have patience deep breathing.
